She was a young girl of age 25 years. She was presented to Emergency department in a very bad condition as she had ingested corrosive in try of getting rid of all her miseries in this world. little did she know that what she would experience after corrosive intake would be more painful and miserable.
She had severe metabolic acidosis and, she was tender in abdomen. Other vitals showed tachycardia, tachypnea, bp was borderline low. She was drowsy but arousable.
She was intubated in Resus and baseline labs sent. She was resuscitated and stabilized a bit. Her chest xray showed Air under diaphragm which we were already suspecting gastric and intestinal perforation in view of corrosive infestation.
Surgery team was taken on board and they took her to OR for exploration and repair ( Thanks to surgery team). She underwent gastrectomy, duodenectomy, feeding jejunostomy. She was kept in SICU and stepped down to floor and finally discharged home in stable condition after staying for 15 days in the hospital. She survived, she made it. Kudos to Emergency Team, surgery team, SICU team and surgical floor for this remarkable recovery of patient.
She was lucky to make it, may she not suffer this pain again. Please don’t compel someone to the extent that they start thinking of finishing themselves.🙏 By dr Ishtiaq Mughal, Emergency Physician
